Indirect (reflected) Light

Concealing the light source achieves two objectives: it leaves finished surfaces smooth and uncluttered and reduces the visual impact of the light source to the eye.  The examples here include colour changing LED (RGBW) that can be set to create depth and ambience from a single lighting fixture.  The kitchen project shows how white tuneable LED can transform a functional space from a working area to a more relaxed feel.

Direct Light

When the volume of light available needs to be maximised a direct light solution is usually the best way forward.  To limit glare and facilitate distribution, we recommend the use of diffused mounting channels.  With light output levels up to 2,500 lumens for every meter of LED, it is possible to find a solution for most applications.

Plaster in profiles like this mean that the output is always direct and dark (in this case, below ground level) spaces are quickly given life and even drama.

Dot or No Dot?

The development of ‘chip-on-board’ (COB) technology allows for LEDs to be mounted much closer together, consequently the number of LEDs on 1 meter of strip has increased from 120 to 480.  This creates a seamless, diffused, output on the LED strip, there is no risk of shadow or dot reflection when using COB strip.  As yet, some LED strips are not manufactured by this technique and we continue to offer 120 chip LED for longer run lengths and higher output requirements.

In addition to this, there are times when the dot provides part of the lighting effect, specifically with digital LED when the movement of a lighting pattern is enhanced by the dot.

Lumens, Watts & Lux

The principal benefit of LED technology is the increased efficiency it offers, it is possible to obtain the same level of illumination but with far lower power consumption.

There are several ways to measure the performance of an LED strip, the main features are explained here:

watts

This is the power consumption for 1 meter of LED strip when running at full power (without dimming)

lumens

This is the number of lumens output by one meter of undiffused LED strip.  It is the measure of brightness.  The best measure of efficiency is the number of lumens created per watt, lm/W.  Our highest level of efficiency is 120lm/W

lux

This is a measure of light level at a certain distance from the light source.  Lux levels are often set to minimum levels for work spaces or for other activities

voltage

This is the measure of direct current from a power source, in our product range this is currently between 5v and 24v with greater voltage allowing power to travel more reliably over greater distances.  Most of the LED we work with will run at 24vDC

colour temperature

This is a measure of the white light in kelvin, the lower the number of kelvin the ‘warmer’ the white.  The most common level we produce is 2700k, which is accepted at the standard warm white colour.  A candle is considered to be 2000k  and daylight at noon is around 5500k

Control Boxes

Our internal engineering and development facilities allow us to build simplified control systems for plug n play operation, whether that is for an on/off light, dimming control, colour operation or full pixel mapping.

We work with you to design and build the most efficient method to operate your lighting system.
